Currently only NBC 29 is transmitting HD programming over the air in Charlottesville. NBC 29 as well as
CBS 19, ABC 16, Fox 27, MyCV 27, and PBS 51 will be shutting off their broadcasts on February 12, 2009.
Their fully digital signals can be picked up with an interior HDTV antenna. After June 12, 2009
all of the current analog transmissions from the major networks will be shut off. At this time, anyone relying
solely on over the air broadcasts for receiving the major networks on their analog televisions will need
to obtain a digital to analog converter to continue to use their old TV. These can be obtained from electronics
stores like Best Buy or online retailers like
Amazon.com.
All of the local Charlottesville channels broadcast from Carter's Mountain, which is due south of Charlottesville. Check
Annennaweb.org for a street level directional orientaion for
your antenna. You should also be able to receive Richmond channels in HD with a rooftop antenna if you
live east of Pantops Mountain.
Comcast Cable HD Channels
Since Comcast bought Adelphia, there have been many improvements to the cable service in Charlottesville.
According to Charlottesville Newsplex,
Comcast is now carrying HD signals from CBS, ABC, and FOX. NBC is available on Comcast in HD as well.
DirectTV HD Channels
Currently, no local channels are available in HD from DirectTV. 104 HD channels are available with the
full HD package,
including ESPNHD and DiscoveryHD.
Dish Network HD Channels
Currently, no local channels are available in HD from Dish Network. 65 HD channels are available with the
Turbo HD package,
including HGTV HD and HDNet.
